Students are able to customize a program of study by choosing from a variety of courses offered by other concentrations. Students take two three-credit-hour courses per semester for six consecutive semesters and graduate in twenty-four months. After the twelve-hour core, students can choose from one of four majors or design a personalized curriculum by choosing from a variety of elective courses. All courses for both degrees are offered in a comprehensive online format. A new student orientation will take place on campus to begin the program, but students may choose to participate via webcast instead of going to campus. Courses include courses on practical skills and content knowledge in order to prepare students for advancement in their current field or position them for a career transition. Each semester, Cumberland School of Law presents a full range of elective courses and special interests. Below is a list of mandatory and elective courses that have been offered in the recent past. The list does not include all courses that have been or may be offered. Each semester, the Vice-Dean determines which courses and seminars meet the above requirements and are therefore considered courses that meet the writing requirements of the higher level.

In making this decision, the Associate Dean takes into account the number and type of written projects assigned; opportunities for a student to meet with a writing teacher to individually assess the student`s written outputs; the number of drafts a student must create of a writing project; and the form of assessment used by the writing teacher. Courses that meet the requirement are then listed in the course schedule and other records labeled “R” in their course numbers. “Attending the pre-1 summer courses allowed me to start my law school journey with more confidence. The program and exams were the perfect foundation to help me understand the framework conditions of my first year in law school. Since I hadn`t been in school in almost two years, I knew the classes would be a great opportunity to experience law classes before diving into a full load in the fall. The classes also allowed me to meet amazing people that I now consider close friends. I highly recommend the courses for all emerging 1Ls! Kiana Kennamore Cumberland Law offers several additional graduate programs for lawyers and non-lawyers, which are online programs that offer students a flexible way to achieve their academic goals. For students who have already earned their Juris Doctor, Cumberland Law offers a Master of Laws (LL.M) program with four concentrations. All LL.M programs require 31 hours of online courses that can be completed in a total of two years. Students take one to two courses per semester (including summer semesters) for six consecutive semesters.

Cumberland Law offers mergers in four complex and growing areas of the legal field: financial services compliance, health law and compliance, higher education law and compliance, and legal operations. The four areas are governed by a complex set of laws. The LL.M program prepares students to understand and practice in these areas of complexity. Stephen Everett Wells Michael E. DeBow Professor of Municipal Law teaches the legal process (2 credit hours). The public law process is taught by Lynn Hogewood, Instructor and Director of Academic Support (3 credit hours). These professors coordinate their courses in a complementary way using a single textbook and adapting the requirements to the project deadlines. Instead of a formal LL.M degree, Cumberland Law also offers compressed certifications in the same four practice areas as their LL.M.

program. These certifications are designed to be completed in five courses that cover the basic principles of the topic. Certification is available for both lawyers and non-lawyers. Non-lawyers who complete the certification process may apply a portion of their courses to Cumberland Law`s Master of Laws studies program. The following courses are mandatory and must be taken in the second or third year: Candidates for Cumberland`s Doctor of Laws may also pursue a second professional degree after completing their first year of law as part of the school`s joint study program. Students typically apply for their second program in the spring of the first year of law school. All applicants for a joint degree must also meet a minimum GPA requirement. Cumberland Law offers nine different joint study programs.

JD students can opt for a joint JD and LL.M program through the Faculty of Law or opt for a professional degree from one of Cumberland`s other professional schools. Typically, students can earn both degrees in three years by dividing certain courses between the two programs. Admitted students who wish to register for summer courses must submit their first-place deposit in full and notify the Admissions Office, lawadm@samford.edu or 800-888-7213, by May 13, 2022. Transfer students are accepted for the fall semester. Once a transfer student is admitted, the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs confirms the number of faculty of law credit hours transferred to Samford University`s Cumberland School of Law. In most cases, all credit hours for regular first-year law courses acquired at an ABA-approved law school with a grade of C or better are carried forward up to a maximum of 40 credit hours. * Admitted students who attend summer courses in the first year will be exempt from the second seat deposit. Students must complete six (6) hours of experiential instruction. Courses that meet the requirements of experiential learning are identified by an E in the section. The course can help students better appreciate the courses of the higher division and be useful in legal practice.

It is recommended that a student take the course in the second year. This commitment to quality legal education continues today as we prepare students for admission and successful work at some of the best law schools in the country. Most law schools recommend an extensive curriculum to prepare for law school. All Cumberland University students interested in studying law have the opportunity to work with Cumberland University`s pre-legal counsel, who is a full-time faculty member. Together, they choose a major that reflects the student`s personal interests and provides challenging courses to prepare the student for a successful competition at law school. The focus is on courses that refine the student`s writing skills, analytical thinking, and verbal communication. In addition, membership in the Pre-Law Society of Cumberland is encouraged for all students interested in studying law. Students have approximately 35 hours of elective courses that allow them to specialize in an area that meets their academic and professional goals. All students must complete a rigorous writing project and meet the requirements of experiential education. Cumberland Law offers 14 different areas of specialization that offer a suggested path for students who wish to practice in these areas. Each year, Cumberland Law offers a selection of online courses that offer flexibility to their traditional JD program.

Students can earn up to 15 credit hours for their JD through online courses. The course is aimed at students who do not have significant business training or courses. Students who have studied English, history or political science, for example, can greatly benefit from the course. Business, accounting or business majors, on the other hand, should not register. First-year students have the opportunity to take two summer courses that provide an introduction to the legal process and offer a total of five credit hours from the law school. Additional courses are offered for all aspects of advocacy: mediation, negotiation, drafting, complex litigation and client advice. With each competency, Cumberland School of Law also offers competitive opportunities for students who want the opportunity to practice. Unique among law schools, Cumberland students can participate in litigation and appeal competitions during their first year. In addition, some students may participate in one of Cumberland`s many national advocacy teams.
